Zodiac elements & modalities
Every sign has one element (what it's made of) and one modality (how it moves). Together they explain most of a sign's character.
The four elements
The fire signs are Aries, Leo and Sagittarius. Fire is the element of drive, courage and self-expression — these signs act first and think on the move.
The earth signs are Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn. Earth is the element of the practical and the physical — these signs build things that last.
The air signs are Gemini, Libra and Aquarius. Air is the element of ideas, words and connection — these signs live in conversation.
The water signs are Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces. Water is the element of emotion, intuition and memory — these signs feel first.
The three modalities
The cardinal signs are Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn. Each one begins a season — spring, summer, autumn and winter — so cardinal energy is about starting things.
The fixed signs are Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius. They fall in the middle of each season, when the weather is settled, so fixed energy is about sustaining.
The mutable signs are Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces. They close each season as it changes into the next, so mutable energy is about adapting.
